Codebreaker: The remarkable and tragic story of one of the 20th century's most important people; Alan Turning. 100 years after his birth, we rediscover the man and the mystery. Codebreaker re-counts the story of this maverick British genius who was crucial to founding three new fields of science as well as breaking the Nazis' naval Enigma code during World War II. Historians credit his codebreaking with helping to shorten the war by two years and saving millions of lives. As the founding father of computer science and artificial intelligence, Alan Turing envisioned our digital world long before anyone else. Turing's visionary brilliance was overshadowed by his conviction for gross indecency with another man in 1952. He was forced to undergo so-called organo-therapy (chemical castration) to change his sexual orientation. In despair, Turing committed suicide in 1954. He was only 41 years old. Codebreaker is an award-winning drama documentary that uses emotional and engaging reconstructions to bring Turing to life in intricate detail and high color. Documentary elements seamlessly interconnect with drama scenes in Codebreaker to offer a three dimensional picture of Turing, his accomplishments, his tragic end, and his lasting legacy.
Julie Christie stars in an award-winning adaptation of Doris Lessing's famous dystopian novel of 1974. This complex, haunting science-fiction feature - screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival in 1981 - is presented in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. Set in Britain at an unspecified point in the near-future, Memoirs of a Survivor tells the story of 'D', a housewife trying to carry on after a cataclysmic war that has left society in a state of collapse. Rubbish is piled high in the streets among near-derelict buildings covered with graffiti; the electricity supply is variable, and water is now collected from a van. 'D' spends her time examining her relations with authority, with the marauding gangs of brutalised children who roam the streets, and with Emily, the traumatised, orphaned teenager who is delivered into her care. A future history as scripted by the visionary writer H.G. Wells, Things to Come set a high benchmark for science fiction with its fantastic design, gigantic sets and spectacular special effects. Acknowledged as a landmark within the genre, Oscar-winning William Cameron Menzies' (Invaders from Mars) creation is an astounding vision of post-war desolation and utopian futurism. Starring Oscar-nominated Raymond Massey (A Matter of Life and Death) as John Cabal and his descendants and the award-winning Ralph Richardson (The Four Feathers) as The Boss, Things to Come showcases a gorgeous, instantly recognisable score by Arthur Bliss. Presented for the first time in High Definition, this version of Things to Come has been painstakingly restored from the remaining film elements and represents the most complete version known to exist. It's Christmas 1940 and the people of Everytown, unprepared and ill-equipped, find themselves at war against an enemy who have been planning such a conflict for years. The land is devastated by the horrors of aerial bombardment as the war drags on for thirty years, causing a period of despair, with feudal tyrants ruling a downtrodden populace suffering famine and pestilence. Age of Wonders:Planetfallis a turn-based strategy game for PC developed by Triumph Studios and published by Paradox Interactive. It is the fifth installment in the AoW series, and the first one to abandon the high fantasy setting.Planetfallis set in the science-fiction world of Star Union, a ruined intergalactic government, destroyed by an unknown disaster. The player takes the side of one of the remaining human factions and leads them against others in an attempt to rebuild crumbled humanity and bring forth a new Age of Wonders. The game combines the strategy elements with the 4X mechanics – map exploration, expanding factions territory, exploitation of resources and extermination of enemies.Gam offers both single-player campaign and multiplayer mode.GameplayThe core gameplay mechanics revolves around gaining control over the world of the game. To do that player must engage the enemy factions on several levers, including battle and diplomacy. At the beginning of the campaign, the player chooses their faction and customizes its leader. As the leader of the faction, the player has the power to broker peace or declare war, as well as assign secret operations, like espionage. The game’s map is created procedurally. Sectors of the map are made of biomes, which contain resources that player will have to harvest to progress. Resources can be spent on production, growing produce for food and collecting energy. Players can also invade camps of other factions to steal their resources and technological advancements.Combat in Planetfallis turn-based and observed from a top-down perspective. Each turn allows the player to take three actions, like opening fire or taking cover. Certain actions can “stagger” the enemy, disrupting their special attacks, etc.Campaign mode and factionsThe story of Age of Wonders Planetfall’s campaign mode is set in the sci-fi universe of Star Union, an intergalactic human government. Due to an unknown cataclysm, the Union was destroyed and humans scattered across space. New factions arose from the collapsed government, each fighting for control over decimated mankind. The player takes the role of one of the faction leaders. Their job is to find out what caused the cataclysm that destroyed the human race and to assert dominance as the true leader of humans.Planetfallfeatures six factions which players can choose to be the leader of, including the Vanguard, space explorers and colonizers, the Amazons, a faction of women, who ride dinosaurs into battle, the Dvar, a dwarf-like faction of miners and Kir’ko, former slave race, who use the fall of the union as a chance to regain independence. Each of the factions possesses special traits and abilities to use in battle and during exploration.ReceptionAge of Wonders:Planetfallreceived positive first impressions from the critics, who commended the developers for trying to take the series into a new direction. Among the praised elements of the game, what stood out the most was the sci-fi setting, varied factions, with their own doctrines to follow and interesting military units – especially the dinosaur-riding Amazons, and certain mechanics of the game, such as Secret Technologies.AoW series has a history of being one of the best turn-based strategy series’. It has managed to maintain this title since the first game, released nearly 20 years ago. By taking Planetfall in the new direction, and abandoning the fantasy setting in favor of the outer space, developers took a huge risk.
