Mine Own Executioner
10,49 € *
zzgl. 1,49 € Versand

With compelling, sympathetic performances from double Oscar nominee Burgess Meredith and accomplished Irish actor Kieron Moore, this powerful psychological drama shows the almost super-human demands of a profession that ranks amongst the most challenging. Adapted from his own novel by BAFTA-winning author and screenwriter Nigel Balchin, Mine Own Executioner is presented in a brand-new High Definition transfer from the original film elements. Meredith stars as Felix Milne, a lay psychiatrist in post-war London who is enlisted to treat Adam Lucian, a fighter pilot deeply traumatised by his experiences in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. Beleaguered by emotional problems of his own, Milne embodies the mixture of dedication, self-distrust and self-criticism that characterises someone with a genuine vocation for the psychiatrist's work; but is he qualified to treat a patient as disturbed and potentially destructive as Adam? Julie Christie stars in an award-winning adaptation of Doris Lessing's famous dystopian novel of 1974. This complex, haunting science-fiction feature - screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival in 1981 - is presented in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. Set in Britain at an unspecified point in the near-future, Memoirs of a Survivor tells the story of 'D', a housewife trying to carry on after a cataclysmic war that has left society in a state of collapse. Rubbish is piled high in the streets among near-derelict buildings covered with graffiti; the electricity supply is variable, and water is now collected from a van. 'D' spends her time examining her relations with authority, with the marauding gangs of brutalised children who roam the streets, and with Emily, the traumatised, orphaned teenager who is delivered into her care. Richard Warwick and Joanna Lumley star in this sexy, exuberant social satire charting the travails of an angry young man reacting against his environment. Adapting his bestselling novel, director Andrew Sinclair draws on his own youthful experiences: The Breaking of Bumbo is a time-capsule portrait of military rigour competing with the era's burgeoning sexual and social freedoms, set against explosive scenes of Swinging-Sixties London. Denied a theatrical release by EMI and only intermittently shown on television, The Breaking of Bumbo is presented here uncut in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements and in its original aspect ratio. Bumbo Bailey, a newly commissioned Ensign of the Household Brigade, becomes quickly bored with the social life this entails. This boredom is rudely shattered when he falls in with the luscious Susie and her friend Jock, bourgeois revolutionaries whose principal occupation is organising anti-war demonstrations. Sensing Bumbo's general dissatisfaction with everything they try to manipulate him into a course of action which could have dire consequences for his future. A classic tale of cowardice and bravery, Alexander Korda's Oscar-nominated adaptation of A.E.W. Mason's iconic novel is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular of the early Technicolor films. With sweeping battle scenes and a tightly constructed script by Oscar-nominated R.C. Sherriff, this is a bold military epic featuring evocative locations and a pounding score by Miklos Rozsa. Showcasing outstanding performances from both John Clements and Ralph Richardson, The Four Feathers is featured here in a High Definition transfer made from original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. Harry Faversham, born into a distinguished military family, automatically joins the army with three close childhood friends – Durrance, Willoughby and Burroughs. Quickly feeling that he is unsuited to the army life, and newly engaged to Ethne, he resigns his commission, only to be accused of cowardice by his friends. Each sends him the traditional white feather in contempt; the fourth is plucked from Ethne's fan. Realising the disgrace he has brought to himself and his family, Harry sets out alone to the distant war to redeem himself... Total War: Three Kingdoms is another installment in the Total War series, developed by Creative Assembly and published by Sega. It is the twelfth main game in the series. Like its predecessors, Three Kingdoms is a PC turn-based real-time strategy game, where players control great armies and lead them to victory on vast maps. Game is set in the titular Three Kingdoms period of China’s history, set between years 220–280 AD. The task of the player is to lead one of 11 factions to become the ruling power in China.Gameplay Gameplay mechanics of TW: Three Kingdoms remain mostly unchanged in comparison to other titles in the Total War series, however, the title introduced some changed and revamped the gameplay. Player decides on which factions out of all 11 they want to join. These factions have their respective generals, called Heroes, that possess several unique abilities and personality traits. They are divided into five categories: Champion, Vanguard, Strategist, Commander and Sentinel.Champion is perfect for taking down enemy heroes; Vanguard heroes excel at eliminating common units; Strategists debuff enemies and provide other bonuses; Commanders balance fighting skill and providing buffs and Sentinels can last long in battle against common units and heroes alike. Generals possess independent personalities, ambitions and needs. Player will want to pay attention to those, because not meeting them may have various consequences. One of the new gameplay mechanics is elements based Wu Xing system. In Total War3 Kingdoms every unit is given its elemental attribute: fire, earth, water, wood and metal. These work differently in different areas. For example, fire reduces the cost for military and boosts melee damage. Earth reduces costs of building government units and provides a boost in morale. Water decrease costs of trade buildings and increases ammunition for ranged units. These elemental attributes both support and work against each other. Player’s task will be to discover which element buffs which and which is it weak against.Another new mechanic is the Guanxi. It is a social relations-based mechanic, where the players’ generals will engage in complex relationships, based on past encounters, level of friendliness, jealousy or hostility. These relationships may be positive or negative and cannot be influenced directly by the player.Combat mechanics are similar to those of previous Total War games. On the battlefield, the player can control both the cavalry and the infantry. Players can deploy three general characters but only once per battle. Generals can be commanded separately from the army units and killing enemy generals gives the player unique loot items. Game introduces Dueling as a form of battle, where the player’s and enemy generals engage in one-on-one duels. The duel ends when one of the participants is killed or flees. The game has two distinct modes: Romance and Records. The Romance mode is based on the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In this mode, due to highly fictional characters of the source material, Generals posses almost inhuman abilities, making them more powerful on the battlefield. The Records mode is more historically accurate. In it generals have no superpowers and cannot be controlled separately from their armies. StoryThe story campaign of Three Kingdoms Total Warbegins in the year 190 AD in the time of the once powerful Han dynasty, now merely a shadow of its former glory. Young emperor’s rule of oppression leads to chaos. In its wake, various warlords raise against the tyrannical ruler and his allied warlord Dong Zhuo, who manipulated the emperor into civil war. The player must side with one of the factions, including those of the famous warlords like Lu Bu, Cao Cao or Liu Bei, and write their own history for China. ReceptionEarly impressions of3 Kingdoms for PC were mostly positive. Critics praised the two game modes, with different gameplay mechanics, as well as the Guanxi system, which added a new layer of complexity to in-game relationships. Ultimately, the game became a major hit amongst strategy gamers which praised its game modes and the setting.

The Gun for Hire (Eureka Classics)

zzgl. 1,49 € Versand

One of the most revered film noir hits of the 1940s, This Gun for Hire was also the debut teaming of Veronica Lake, in one of her sultriest and most iconic roles, and Alan Ladd. Following the success of the film, the duo would go on to team up in several more features, although This Gun for Hire remains their most fondly remembered pairing. Ladd – as a frightening yet oddly sympathetic hit man – was only fourth-billed in this defining early noir, yet it became the breakout role that turned him into a star. As The New York Times said of Ladd upon the film's 1942 release, He is really an actor to watch. After this stinging performance, he has something to live up to – or live down. Lake is nightclub chanteuse Ellen, and her police detective boyfriend Michael (Robert Preston) is on the hunt for assassin-for-hire Philip Raven (Ladd), after Raven performed a hit on a chemist with a secret formula and a taste for blackmail. When Raven's employer Gates (Laird Cregar) double crosses him after the job is done, Raven seeks revenge, and his path crosses with Ellen after she is hired to perform at Gates' club. Raven learns that the stolen formula is for a poison gas that is to be sold to the Japanese, and his pangs of conscience – and revelations of his tortured past – turn Ellen's fear into compassion, just as dangerous forces close in on Raven. But Ellen is still unsure if Raven can be trusted... Adapted from Graham Greene's novel, This Gun for Hire is a stylish wartime espionage noir that was actually in the middle of shooting when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entered the war. Lake and Ladd were such a dynamic pairing that Paramount already teamed them again for the same year's adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's The Glass Key before this was even released. In a touch of cinematic irony, The Glass Key had previously been filmed in 1935...by This Gun for Hire director Frank Tuttle (who did not return for the '42 version). Special Features: 1080p presentation on Blu-ray from a 4K scan of the original film elements Uncompressed LPCM 2.0 audio Audio commentary by film scholar Adrian Martin “This Gun for Hire” episode of Lux Radio Theater with the voices of Alan Ladd and Joan Blondell “This Gun for Hire” episode of The Screen Guild Theater with the voices of Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake Theatrical trailer A collector’s booklet featuring new writing by film writer and journalist Barry Forshaw, and film writer Craig Ian Mann
